Some classifications of Coconut Oil are based on the temperature the oil is processed at. Raw doesn’t go over 45C/115F. The theory behind this is, less temperature, more nutrition! Raw Coconut Oil also keeps a lot of its naturally occurring enzymes which can help your immune and digestive system. Unrefined Coconut Oil is packed the anti-oxidants that, if refined, might have been lost along the way. Although organic Coconut Oil contains fat, it’s mostly healthy and, when used in the right amounts can help reduce body fat! Unrefined Coconut Oil also has a slightly stronger taste and, usually, a darker colour than other coconut oils. So if you’re looking for a strong ‘coco-nutty’ taste then this type is definitely for you, it’s packed with antioxidants and has loads of health benefits!
Organic means that the coconut oil is free from the nasty chemicals that often come with farming. It’s free from things like pesticides that can be potential harmful, if not to you then to wildlife. Coconut farming is often an organic process, so you’re usually safe when it comes to most pesticides. Although vigilance is still needed, make sure you get clued up and go with trusted brands.
Virgin Oil is Coconut oil’s worst kept secret; there is no official industry standard for Virgin Oil. However, as with Olive Oil, there is an unspoken rule and, once again, it’s all about processing and producing. Virgin Oil is basically Coconut Oil that’s been produced with Non-Copra processed oil. Virgin Oil is usually seen as a much better and more natural way to produce Coconut oil, it helps keep it tasty and, more importantly, healthy.
Extra Virgin Oil
Extra Virgin is quite an elusive term. Again, it has no official industry standard but it’s often used commercially, as a term that describes Coconut Oil that has less harmful fatty acids than just regular Virgin Oil. Extra Virgin Oil also keeps a lot of its nutrients and is an excellent way to maintain a naturally healthy body.
Fractionated Coconut Oil goes through a process of separation. What happens is all of the long chain fatty acids are removed, leaving only medium chain fatty acids completely saturating the oil. This process allows the coconut to have even more uses, ranging from your everyday cooking to being used in Antiseptics and aromatherapy. As well as being rich in good fatty acids, fractionated Coconut Oil also lasts a long time, making stocking up well worth it.
Cold Pressed Oils are usually done on a lower heat, hence the name and it is also done naturally. Good Cold pressed Coconut Oil should not be processed, refined or deodorized. No Chemicals are used to remove the coconut Oil so it keeps its natural goodness.
